IBC 015 The Benefits of EFT in Helping Couples with Aviva Rizel, LMFT - IBC PODCAST https://www.ibcpodcast.com/ibc-015-the-benefits-of-eft-in-treating-and-helping-couples/ Wed, 20 Dec 2017 03:46:06 +0000 https://www.ibcpodcast.com/?p=4270 In this episode, we invited Aviva Rizel, LMFT who speaks to us about the benefits of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) in treating and helping couples. EFT was developed primarily by Dr. Susan Johnson back in the 80s. Its primary roots come from experiential, person-centered, systemic and attachment theory. Research outcomes demonstrate that couples that undergo this form of treatment have 90% of significant improvement, 70-73% rate of shifting from distress to recovery, even after treatment has concluded, results show that 60% maintain gains or simply continue to move. Here are some EFT main points: Accessibility and Responsiveness are the building blocks of a secure attachment bond. In trying to connect, distressed couples get caught in negative repetitive sequences of interaction expressing secondary emotions rather than primary emotions. Partners are not sick, they’re stuck in having unmet needs and desires. You want to learn more, listen to this podcast episode, give us your opinion, and shared it. We hope that the information you find here is beneficial to you, and if you’re struggling with your relationship, don’t hesitate to seek help. We’ll be publishing more episodes on couples and the challenges they face nowadays.  Our gratitude to Aviva Rizel, LMFT for taking the time to educating us on this sensitive topic.     Aviva Rizel, MA, LMFT, is a licensed marriage and family therapist in private practice in Cedarhurst, NY where she specializes in couples work. She is certified as an Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy Supervisor and has taught EFT in multiple states in America as well as internationally. IBC 008 Post Socio-Emotional Effects of Immigration with Dr. Michelle Silva - IBC PODCAST https://www.ibcpodcast.com/post-socio-emotional-effects-of-immigration/ Wed, 01 Nov 2017 14:03:59 +0000 https://www.ibcpodcast.com/?p=4167 In this episode recorded in Spanish only, Mayra and I invited Dr. Michelle Silva, Psy.D., who is the Associate Director of the Connecticut Latino Behavioral Health System and has worked extensively with the Latino population in CT. She enlightened us about the POST SOCIO-EMOTIONAL EFFECTS OF IMMIGRATION here in the USA. To name some: Loss of natural supports: immigrants, leave behind their families in the pursuit of better days. Loss of identity: once arrived, the cultural shock and the questioning of one’s role in the foreign country. Loss of social status: most of the time, a modus vivendi in a country of origin, is sacrificed once arrived in the USA. Uncertainty: starting from zero in a foreign country, and leaving everything behind, creates a lot of uncertainty and when homeostasis is not reached, conditions such as depression and anxiety are among the most common. PTSD: for many immigrants, leaving their country of origin is the only alternative given their circumstances of violence that include gangs, organized crime, drug cartels, human trafficking, etc. For some experiencing PTSD symptoms is part of their baggage and is exacerbated during the process of immigrating to a foreign country due to the experience of walking for days or nights with limited support and risking their lives or even worse by being victims of further violence during their journey. We hope this episode brings light to our audience and helps develop empathy towards those who have immigrated to the USA for various reasons.  Feel free to provide your opinion and subscribe for unique access to our gallery of episodes. We want to thank Dr. Silva for taking our invitation and for helping us comprehend beyond the stigma of immigration.     Michelle Sylva, Psy.D. has a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Hartford, is currently the Associate Director of the Connecticut Latino Behavioral Health System and an Assistant Professor at Yale University School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Silva has an extensive career with a heap of honors, recognitions, grants, national and international oral presentations, etc. It was an honor for us to have Dr. Silva as our guest, we thanked her for taking the time to share her knowledge with us and wish her the best of luck in her current and future endeavors. IBC 007 Solange’s case, a DACA recipient - IBC PODCAST https://www.ibcpodcast.com/solanges-case-a-daca-recipient/ Tue, 24 Oct 2017 02:52:07 +0000 https://www.ibcpodcast.com/?p=4152 In this episode, Mayra and I interviewed the brave Solange, a DACA recipient who shared with us the benefits of this program but first, let’s begin with a definition of DACA which stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. This law was an executive order entered by President Barack Obama back in 2012 in order to allow thousands of young people who were brought to the USA illegally as children to receive a two-year renewable deferred action from deportation and to be eligible for work. Nonetheless, there are several requirements that one must meet to be eligible and those are the following: Be under the age of 31 as of June 15, 2012; Entered the United States prior to your 16th birthday; Resided in the United States since June 15, 2007, and be currently present in the U.S.; Be in the United States on June 15, 2012, and must be physically in the U.S. at the time of filing for request for deferred action; Entered the United States without border inspection before June 15, 2012. Must be currently in school, have graduated, or obtained an equivalent certificate of completion from high school, successfully obtained a general education development (GED) certificate. Must not have been convicted of a felony, significant misdemeanor, three or more other misdemeanors, and must not pose a threat to national security or public safety. Despite the above requirements and the fact that thousands of people have benefited from this program, the current administration led by “President Trump” has threatened to end it putting in jeopardy not only DACA recipients but also their families. Solange takes us through her journey of coming to the USA as a child, having to face many challenges that immigrants suffer in a foreign country; however, with such determination that has helped her overcome any barriers and be a productive individual to our community. Nevertheless, emotionally impacted by the recent news which potentially compromises her stay in the USA. At IBC, we applaud her efforts and support her to continue fighting towards achieving her goals. We are hoping this episode helps our audience to gain awareness about the reality of DACA recipients, their struggle, and pain, as well as their accomplishments and dreams.
